Hi Parents and Caregivers- we will be having a Wordly Wise Quiz on Lesson 1 words on Friday, October 10th. The students ARE NOT required to memorize the definitions and parts of speech. They do need to know how to use them, and recognize them being used, in the correct context. Wordly Wise teaches students academic vocabulary in the context of nonfiction passages covering a variety of grade appropriate topics from literature, the sciences, social studies, and cultural literacy. In doing so, the students are able to learn how to use these vocabulary words in real world context. I am including a link here to the Wordly Wise website where the students can play interactive games, and use flash cards to understand the words and their context much easier.

Today we had by far the coolest trip yet. We went to Nauset Light to meet with Mark Borrelli who is a Geologist from Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies. He taught the students, and teachers how to use Emory Rod's to measure the beach, and take data for beach profiling. The students really enjoyed it! Thank you, Mark for opening an entire new realm of possibilities for the fourth graders! They cannot wait to start entering in their data and graphing it- nevermind how excited we all are to get back out in March and see how much the beach has changed.
MYSTERY BOOK REPORT TITLE AND AUTHOR IS DUE TO MRS. Z BY FRIDAY! I have received them from some students- but I am still waiting on a few! Thanks!
On Tuesday we will be heading to Nauset Light in Eastham. We (the students and teachers) are being given an amazing opportunity to work with a real Geologist. Mark Borrelli, from Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies is going to be working with grades 1-5 throughout this entire school year. He is contributing to, and helping, to make our science curriculum Cape-Cod-centric, real-world aligned, and interactive in a child friendly way! I am so excited to get the program going and am really looking forward to the students becoming "natural scientists."
On Tuesday, the fourth graders will start to collect beach profiling data using Emory Rods. Mark is going to first teach the students how to use the Emory Rods, and then we will head back and record our collected data. In March, April, and May, we will head back to the beach and see how much the beach profiles have changed. This lesson corresponds with our Earth Science Unit, and is just another way we will be able to utilize our home here on Cape Cod. Below is a link to Woods Hole, where they have some information about Emory Rods and Beach Profiles, just in case anyone is looking for some extra reading and learning materials (: I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend! See you all tomorrow! http://www.whoi.edu/seagrant/page.do?pid=52235&tid=282&cid=88638 Today we worked hard in Math Workshop on estimating sums by rounding to the nearest thousand. The students partnered up and played a game to reinforce their skills. Even in fourth grade this is a skill that needs LOTS of practice! And they had fun while doing it! Happy Friday! Today we had a FABULOUS field trip to Kent's Point in Orleans. The students absolutely loved being able to poke around the beach grass during low tide in search of creatures, rock fossils, and sea cucumbers! We also got to enjoy it with the 3rd grade class which always adds to the fun! Another reason why we are the luckiest to be a part of the Laurel School community! We will be changing our location for tomorrow's Cape Cod Classroom to Kent's Point due to the bee/wasp influx at Fort Hill. Kent's Point is part of the Orleans Conservation Trust. They have beautiful wooded walking trails that wind along and end up at Pleasant Bay in Orleans. The students will be able to incorporate our recent studies on classifying animals, and vertebrates and non-vertebrates. There they will be able to find and locate animals that fall under these categories before we start really focusing down on the different classes of animals. Please remember to pack sneakers and a light jacket!
Just a quick reminder- this morning is All Community Morning Meeting at 9:15. The second and third graders will be presenting, and the whole school will wrap up the meeting with a song. I hope to see you all there!! On Tuesday we will be heading to Fort Hill for Cape Cod's Classroom. We will be going with Ms. Karin's third grade class. Looking very forward to it! Today the fourth graders headed to Mayflower Beach in search for sand dollars. This beach has always been a jackpot spot for these beautiful sea creatures. Unfortunately we didn't even find one- but it was SO MUCH FUN! The students and I had an absolute blast. They were still able to explore different shells (and what kind of sea creatures these shells were homes to), shell sacks, different rocks, and we even got to talk about why the sand was softer on the bay side, versus the sound side. Overall, it truly encompassed our whole "Cape Cod's Classroom" definition. We are very excited to be getting out each week! Thank you, Dr. Jeff and Board for giving us this amazing opportunity to explore our home. |
