Science
Expo
March 26, 2015
4th Grade
This year the Science Expo is scheduled for March 26, 2015. The science-fair project challenges a student to solve a question using the scientific method. It is a great way to excite children about science, teach them to think like scientists, develop their organizational skills, and enhance their writing and oral presentation skills.
I will be giving students handouts in class that will help explain the process and guide the students on their way. The bulk of the work will be completed at home. I hope that you will offer support and guidance, but remember that the project is your child’s responsibility.
Students must come up with 3 topics that they may be interested in doing an experiment on. These must be scientifically based, not just “cool” ideas. Each idea should involve a control, so they can have accurate results. The 3 ideas are due on January 30, 2015. I will discuss the ideas with the students and we will choose one for them to do their experiment on.
The experiments are done at home, and the students will have scheduled assignments (material list, procedure, etc.) that will be posted in the classroom as well as on a handout. Attached you will find a schedule of due dates for the process of completing the Science Fair project. Your child will need to stick to the schedule in order to help them be successful.
The final experiments will be assembled (at school) and displayed on a large display board here at school. We will provide the display boards. Students will bring their experiments into school the week of the Science Expo to display with their boards.
Students in grades 3-5 will present their boards and experiments to judges on the morning of the Science Fair. The students are judges ont heir understanding of the experiment, their presentation to the judges, and the appearance of their board.
Thank you in advance for supporting your child in this exciting process!
