On Friday we started a new unit in Science, Earth Science. The students learned about what minerals are, different types of rocks, and how you can tell the different between rocks and minerals. They learned about igneous rocks (lava, basalt, and granite), metamorphic rocks (marble, quartzite, and slate), and sedimentary rocks (sandstone, limestone, chalk, and coal). They also learned the different properties of minerals, including color or streak, cleavage or fracture, hardness, and luster. The students then had an opportunity to observe some rocks and minerals with a magnifying glass, and wrote down their observations in their Science Notebook. Next week we will be focusing on what rocks and minerals are used for in everyday life, and focus more on how they are different and how they are alike.

Happy Mother's Day to all you fabulous Mama's out there! I want to thank you all for being such wonderful parents to your children, and for being so involved in, and supportive, of their education. It's parents like YOU that help make your children's learning so easy and smooth. Thank you!. I hope you all enjoyed the flowers and beautiful essay about why you should win the Mother of the Year Award!
The student's Poetry Book Reports were AMAZING today! I love that each child got to pick the project that worked best for them and their individual learning styles. It truly showed in their presentations. The options they could choose from were to pick their favorite poem, make an illustration to go with their favorite poem, and then write their own poem to go with the illustration and their favorite poem. The second option was to choose their favorite poem, memorize it, and recite it to the class. Below are some pictures from the morning.

Archaeologists have found that people have used tiles to make mosaics and to decorate homes, temples, and other buildings as long ago as 4000 B.C. The Romans called these tiles tesselae, from which we get the word tessellation. A tessellation is the repeated use of shapes to fill a flat surface without gaps or overlaps.
Students in 4th Grade took a 3in. x 3in. Square, and cut it into a shape they thought would work for a tessellation. When creating these shapes, and then transferring them onto paper, they had to keep in mind the three Geometric Transformations that they learned about in Math. These transformations include translation, reflection, and rotation. Good Morning,

As part of our Physical Science Unit, the students have been learning all about circuits. They have been learning about closed and open circuits, and insulators and conductors. They also had the pleasure of creating a "Squishy Circuit" with homemade dough, LED Lights, a mechanical buzzer, an electric motor, and a piezoelectric buzzer. They kids had a great time! Below are some pictures from the fun!
